The Importance of Having Good Oral Hygiene

Nov 12, 2019

Your oral hygiene is highly important, yet many Dental Land patients do not know how to brush or floss properly. Doing this is important because it keeps your teeth healthy and clean, preventing plaque from building up and eating at the enamel. If you want to maintain your oral health, practicing good oral hygiene, visiting your Pasadena dentist, and mastering the basics is important.

Brushing 101

Brushing is one way to keep your teeth healthy, so let’s look at how to properly brush your teeth.

Brush your teeth twice a day. Take your time and use a toothbrush that has soft bristles along with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. You may want to upgrade to an electric toothbrush, as these are more effective at reducing plaque and decreasing the risk of gum disease. When you brush, hold your toothbrush at an angle and try to brush towards the area between the teeth and your gums. Use gentle motions and make sure to brush every area of your mouth, including the tongue.

Flossing 101

Aside from brushing, flossing techniques should also be improved to see a rise in your oral health.

Flossing is just as important as brushing. Your teeth have small areas that the bristles of a toothbrush do not fit, leaving them vulnerable to plaque and decay. Floss teeth once each day, using a generous amount of floss and winding most of it around your finger. Grip it tightly while gently guiding it between your teeth. Use a rubbing motion and curve the floss against the tooth when you reach the gum line. Floss one tooth at a time, but be sure to floss between every tooth and take your time.

Visit Your Dentist Often

Your oral hygiene is greatly improved when you visit a dentist at least twice a year. Your dentist can provide you with valuable information about your oral health and provide a thorough cleaning that gets rid of any plaque or tartar that has not been removed during regular brushing. Speak with a Dental Land dentist near you in Pasadena to get an exam and make sure that your teeth are as healthy as possible.
